Carnaval de Québec - Quebec Winter Carnival
Each year, in the middle of winter, the Carnaval de Québec (Quebec Winter Carnival) takes place in Quebec City, Canada. Typically a very chilly affair, this particular winter (2023) was one of the coldest – a frosty -30C (-23F) – so cold in fact that the first evening’s main event (the carnival night parade) was postponed to the following night when it had “warmed” up to a balmy -24C (-11F).
Wrapped up in multiple layers of thermals, and hand warmers inserted into 2 layers of gloves, I attempted to document this very chilly procession.

The following evenings I ventured to cover the ice carving exhibitions, which were much fewer than usual because it was just too cold for your average ice carver!
There was also an ice instrument exhibition, which required the instruments to be re-tuned regularly by wiping off excess snow and ice that was quickly forming.
